A memorial built as a testimony to the sacrifices made by soldiers has been dedicated to the nation at the Marina Park here.
The memorial was dedicated to the nation by Andaman and Nicobar Islands Lieutenant Governor
Lt Gen A K Singh (Retd). Param Vir Chakra, India's highest gallantry
award, is awarded to officers and enlisted personnel of all military
branches for the highest degree of valour and self-sacrifice in the
presence of the enemy and may be awarded posthumously.
The memorial would serve as an inspiration to the Indian youth about the
bravery, valour and the supreme sacrifices made by the country's brave
sons, Singh said. Expressing hope that this memorial would invigorate
feelings of courage and love for the country among the youth of India, the Lt Governor complimented the Port Blair Municipal Corporation for developing the memorial.
While Cellular Jail in the islands is a testimony to the sacrifices made by our freedom fighters, this memorial will remind the people about the sacrifices made by our brave hearts in the post Independence era, he said.
In his speech on the occasion, the Commander–in-Chief A&N
Command, Vice Admiral Pradeep Kumar Chatterjee said patriotism is in the
DNA of the islanders and with the construction of this memorial, they
have shown their respect to the valiant men of the nation.
